Pam Shanks earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Kansas. Facilitating a match between Montessori and every child is the focus of her work. A master educator, author and presenter, she specializes in inclusive Montessori education by providing professional development and student consultative services for schools and teachers serving children whose development is complicated by delay or disability.
Her 30+ years as a Montessori teacher and wide variety of inclusive experiences beyond the classroom have culminated in a deep understanding of the Montessori method, inclusive schools, and inclusive education. She is the mother of two accomplished Montessori daughters and three amazing Montessori granddaughters.
About The Course

Welcome to this introductory course inspired by Pamela Shanks’ book, The Montessori Approach to Classroom-Based Interventions. This short course offers educators and caregivers a foundational understanding of Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) and practical strategies to support children with sensory differences.
You’ll gain insight into recognizing SPD and learn about its impact on children’s development, including motor skills, social interactions, academic abilities, and emotional regulation. The course briefly explores sensory systems beyond the five basic senses, highlighting the vestibular, proprioceptive, and interoceptive systems.
Practical suggestions for modifying classroom environments are included to better support sensory needs, such as creating calming spaces and managing sensory overload. You’ll also find simple strategies for addressing sensory modulation challenges like Over-Responsivity, Under-Responsivity, and Sensory Craving.
This introductory course provides a starting point for understanding and addressing sensory processing differences, making classrooms and homes more inclusive and supportive spaces for children.
